Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center
Once individuals resolve to address their drug/alcohol addictions, detoxification is the first and most crucial step in a safe path to recovery. Hooper Center provides medical detoxification and stabilization at this critical juncture. There, patients receive 4-7 days of medical treatment for early withdrawal symptoms. A team of registered nurses and technicians provide around the clock medical care, and the Medical Director sees patients several times a week. Each patient also engages in ongoing professional counseling.
Many of the staff at the Hopper Center are in recovery and have turned their lives around. They are an example that recovery is possible and often provide the first rays of hope for the long journey ahead.
Hooper Center is open to all individuals regardless of insurance or ability to pay. Upon completing the program, patients get support from staff to identify safe housing and ongoing resources to support recovery including the CCC Recovery Center.
It Began Here
His name was David P. Hooper. He was an eccentric, intelligent young man; a talented track star, aspiring politician and an alcoholic. He was also the last person to die of alcoholism in the Portland city jail. In 1971, Oregon made the momentous shift to define alcoholism as a disease, not a crime. That act also shifted the focus away from the legal system to the social service system to search for a better way to handle public drug and alcohol abuse. Central City Concern has been a vital part of the process from the beginning and the Hooper Sobering Program bears David’s name.
Impact
In 2010, approximately 2,000 people got their start to sobriety at Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center.
