Just because Thanksgiving Day has passed doesn’t mean that we’ve stopped being thankful! Last Wednesday, volunteers from our Old Town Chinatown neighbors Airbnb gave their time to assist with Thanksgiving dinners at two of our housing sites.
At our Madrona housing site in the Rose Quarter, four Airbnb volunteers spent the afternoon setting up the community dining area, preparing food, serving the delicious meals and dessert, and cleaning up. In all, they served about 90 residents.
Lucy Mashia, the Madrona’s Resident Service Coordinator, said that the volunteer were wonderful. She also noted that a resident’s grandson was hanging out around the volunteers, and that it was really touching to see them “really empower him to help out” during the set up!
Meanwhile, over at our historic Martha Washington building in Downtown Portland, another group of fourAirbnb volunteers and one long-time volunteer made the community’s Thanksgiving meal one to remember! Dale Noonkester, the Martha Washington’s Resident Service Coordinator, provided a full report:
“Thanksgiving at the Martha was nothing short of spectacular. The long community table was decked in a fabulous centerpiece and we had a mobile dessert cart filled with pies, cakes and cookies many got topped with whipped cream and or ice cream. We served 93 Martha residents and their guests, which is an all-time high. Seconds were served to a third of those in attendance. The four volunteers from AirBnB so enjoyed the experience that they vowed to come back next year. Our long term volunteer, Janet Hammer, was invaluable with the day-before food preparation and helping to set up our dining room up and serving food. She also donated food that made our Thanksgiving feast particularly special. I’m so thankful for everyone for making this the best dinner to date.”
